Today’s Movie Clip O’ the Day comes from The Truman Show, a 1998 movie that feels eerily representative of the state of the nation—world, really—in 2026. In today’s clip, Truman is slowly realizing that the world around him has been engineered. What he thought was real and true is now suspect. It’s dawning on him that the information he once trusted implicitly was contaminated the whole time. He looks around, suddenly feeling untethered and searching for a sense of confirmation and comfort. Everything that has always been familiar is now strange and new.
When you spend the majority of your time not questioning the information that comes into your life, complacency starts to materialize around you. Assuming things are true instead of asking the most basic questions about where the information is coming from and what motives might be behind the spin is dangerous in ways we’re not even able to comprehend.
Kind of makes you wonder what Truman (or any one of us) might be manipulated into supporting or co-signing if we’re not paying attention. What happens to our ability to sort real from fake, engineered from natural? And if we’re overwhelmed with the bad news that bombards us every time we look up, do we go numb? Is that the objective? Who benefits from a population of lobotomized citizens? Hrmmm.
Numbness only requires inaction.
So, what would you do? Shit, what would I do?! Are we like Truman? Do we fight for reality? Do we rage against the machine? Or do we do as Cypher from The Matrix suggested? Do we go right back to sleep and allow the Matrix to tell us that this piece of steak in front of us is delicious even if it isn’t actually there?
Me? I say fuck it. I choose truth. I choose revolution. Consequences be damned.
